Over the upcoming weekends I shall be indulging in my less active interests, namely books and film.
Books – The Hay Festival
Well known in the literary world is the Hay Festival, held annually in the pretty Welsh town of Hay-on-Wye. For a small town it has an unusually large proportion of bookshops – about 40 of them, all selling second hand books. And when the Festival is on, this quiet town is over-run.
The 2011 Hay Festival runs from the Thursday 26th May to Sunday 5th June and draws a wide array of writers, comedians and musicians. Just choose which shows to go to from the extensive program and have a fun few days.
I’ve been the last couple of years and always have a great time. So, I’ll be heading there for the first, bank-holiday weekend and shall find some time to get out into the Black Mountains or Brecon Beacons, either on the bike or walking, as well.
Film – The Adventure Travel Film Festival
As for film, the 2011 Adventure Travel Film festival is being held in Devon. It runs from Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th June and should be a fun weekend on films, camping and outdoor action.
I’ve never been to this, but it looks like a good excuse to watch some amazing footage from around the world that will no doubt inspire me to travel more.
There will be a number of workshops running over the weekend for budding film-makers. Since I’m thinking of investing in a video camera to film my next cycle trip, I may pick up some useful advice.
If you want some action, there are a number of activities on offer too, from surfing and water-skiing to climbing and abseiling. A weekend hardly seems long enough!
