From Oaxaca and then San Cristobal de las Casas we cycled on to Palenque, further into the heart of the Chiapas region. And after a few days rest, including a look round the Mayan ruins of Palenque, we took the road to the Guatemalan border at Frontera Corozal.

A lancha (wooden boat with outboard motor) took us across the river and into Guatemala. A few kilometres in, on rough dirt roads and I take my first fall of the trip! But no harm, save for some bruises and blood…

After a couple of days more riding and we arrived in Flores, a quaint tourist town  on a small island in Lago Peten Itza. We took another day off to visit the impressive Mayan ruins of Tikal, in the depths (with a good tarred road!) of the forested Peten region.

And from here we have cycled south to Rio Dulce… time for some packrafting tomorrow!
