Big Adventures on a Small Bike

Searching for solitude in the wilderness, Helen Lloyd went to Iceland via the Faroe Islands for the summer of 2018. She found freedom and adventure riding her old Yamaha Serow motorbike, tackling the rough trails and deep river crossings for which Iceland is renowned.

The Land of Ice and Fire is more than crevasse-ridden glaciers and lava-spewing volcanoes. Despite killer sheep, cold winds and driving rain, Iceland’s steaming hot pools, strong coffee and generous people melt snow and warm hearts.

With illuminating descriptions, Helen Lloyd weaves the history and traditions of the country and the colourful characters from the sagas into her own riveting story, which she tells with typical humour and humility.

A must-read for anyone interested in Iceland or motorcycle travel.

Absolutely fascinating! Helen Lloyd has excelled with her latest book. She makes the majesty, the history; the traditions and the unique challenges of Iceland come alive

A lovely description of Iceland and the joys and perils of lone biking.

Reader Reviews

I romped through the book in one sitting last night, which says a lot about how much I enjoyed it. There’s a great balance between journey narrative and poetic immersion in nature (which is Helen’s writing at its very best), place and people and touching introspection, observation and history. To say it’s fabulous would sound too throw-away. However, it is. Fabulous.

Feel free to download the gpx tracks file of the routes I took. Be aware that I didn’t record my tracks as I rode, but have created these since, so I can’t guarantee they’re 100%, but they’re pretty close. Each track in the file relates to a section of the book.
